| 内容記述 | この小論では、マーガレット・オリファントの後期作品『カースティーン』(1890)を取り上げ、それ以前の作品のヒロインたちと比較しながら、女性の生き方へのオリファントのアプローチの変容について考察する。『カースティーン』以前の小説のヒロインたちも、それぞれに社会の中で活躍できる道を模索する強い女性たちだった。しかし、彼女たちは最終的にその方便として結婚を選択し、夫を表に立たせるという家父長制の枠組みの中で自己実現を追求していた。一方、カースティーンは家父長が支配する家庭から脱却し、ロンドンでビジネスを成功させる。物語は冒頭ロマンス小説を思わせるが、次第に別の物語へと変貌していく。この作品はヒロインの異性関係を排除し、独立した女性同士の連帯を語る物語となっている。この分析を通して、オリファントが『カースティーン』において、家父長制の枠組みを超えて、女性の自立と連帯を物語化するに至ったことを明らかにしたい。 | |||||||||

| 内容記述 | This paper examines Margaret Oliphant's later work, Kirsteen(1890), highlighting her shift in portraying women's lives by comparing the protagonist with the heroines of her earlier works. The heroines of Oliphant's pre-Kirsteen novels are also strong women who seek ways to thrive within society. However, they ultimately pursued self-fulfillment by choosing marriage as a strategic means to an end. They achieve their goals within the patriarchal framework by allowing their husbands to take the forefront. In contrast, Kirsteen breaks free from the patriarchal household and finds success in business in London. While the story begins with elements of a romantic plot, it gradually transforms into a different narrative. This novel eschews the heroine’s relationships with men and instead emphasizes solidarity among independent women. Through this analysis, I illuminate how Oliphant, in Kirsteen, transcends the framework of patriarchy to present a narrative that celebrates women's independence and mutual support. | |||||||||
