The heroines of Oliphant's pre-Kirsteen novels are also strong women who seek ways to thrive within society. However, they ultimately pursued self-fulfillment by choosing marriage as a strategic means to an end. They achieve their goals within the patriarchal framework by allowing their husbands to take the forefront. In contrast, Kirsteen breaks free from the patriarchal household and finds success in business in London. While the story begins with elements of a romantic plot, it gradually transforms into a different narrative. This novel eschews the heroine’s relationships with men and instead emphasizes solidarity among independent women.
