| 内容記述 | バーバラ・ピムはその人間観察の鋭さやウィットに富んだ語り口で、イギリスの偉大な小説家ジェーン・オースティンに喩えられることが多い。彼女がオースティン流のイギリス喜劇の伝統を受け継いでいることは明らかである。本稿では、『祝福のグラス』を取り上げ、語りの観点からその喜劇性について考察する。この作品は、ヒロイン、ウィルメット・フォーサイスが一人称で語る物語であるが、彼女は現実誤読を繰り返すあてにならない語り手である。彼女の語りを分析することによって、語り手の人物設定と彼女のナイーブな語りが生み出すドラマティック・アイロニーが浮き彫りとなる。この作品の喜劇としての成功は誤読する語り手ウィルメットを創造したことによると言ってよいだろう。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | Barbara Pym has been often compared to Jane Austen because of her acute sense of observation and witty descriptions. Evidently, she inherits the English tradition of comedy from Austen. In this paper, I would like to examine Pym’s comic strategies in A Glass of Blessings in terms of narration. The story is narrated in the first person by the heroine Wilmet Forsyth, who turns out to be a fallible narrator at the beginning of the novel. The analyses of her narration will reveal dramatic ironies which derive from her naivety and self-centeredness. The success of A Glass of Blessings as a comedy depends to a large extent on the adoption of the fallible heroine as narrator | |||||
