| 内容記述 | 明治期から大正期の間にこの話の邦訳は合計7 話出版されている。そのうちドイツ語から訳されたものは2 話、英語訳からは3 話、ロシア語訳からは1 話、底本が不明のものは1 話である。改変箇所は英語訳の影響を受けたものが多く、ドイツ語原典に忠実な訳は1 話しか存在しない。小人の名前については、ドイツ語の名前を使っているものが2 話、ロシア語の名前が1 話、日本語の名前が4 話ある。名前を当てられた小人は最後の場面で体を引き裂くのではなく、片足で跳んで逃\げると改変されているものが多い。これは底本に使用された英語訳に施された改変である。日本人訳者によって行われた改変は、生まれた赤子の性別を男性にしたことである。ドイツ語の原典では「最初に生まれた子」としか表現されていないのに、多くの日本語訳では「王子」にされている。1873 年の太政官布告263 号で貴族や華族に対して長男の家督相続が日本史上初めて法的に明確化された。そのような日本の社会状況がおそらく改変に反映されたのであろう。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | Seven translations of “Rumpelstiltskin,” one of Grimm’s fairy tales, can be identified from the Meiji and Taisho eras. Two of them were translated from German, three from English, one from Russian, and one from an unknown source. Nevertheless, most of these translations were influenced by the English version and only one is faithful to the original German story. Two stories use German names for the dwarf, one uses a Russian name, and four use Japanese names. In many of the stories, the dwarf whose name is guessed is not torn into half; instead, he jumps on one leg and runs away in the final scene. This is a change made in the translations that used the English version as the original text. A new change incorporated by the Japanese translators is clearly mentioning the gender of the baby born as male. In the original German text, it is only described as “the first-born child,” but in many Japanese translations, it is “the prince.” In 1873, the Grand Council of State Proclamation No. 263 legally clarified the inheritance of the eldest son to the nobility and noble families for the first time in Japanese history. This social situation was probably reflected in the changes incorporated in the Japanese translation. | |||||
