However, they are not faithful translations of the original tales but greatly modified retellings. This essay aims to specifically grasp what Miekichi Suzuki, Akai Tori editor, means by “retellings that focus on the child” by comparing these stories with the original Grimm versions. The retelling avoided elements such as cruel expressions, the presence of a wicked mother-in-law, words and deeds against the rules of etiquette, and moral lessons, and emphasized elements such as forgiving sinners without a severe punishment, brightly colored clothing, and a primary focus on enlightening boys. These stories profess to emphasize fantasy, but otherworldly beings such as dwarfs and Godfather Death, through whom fantasy is stirred, are removed from the title, and the expression “you will be happy” is altered to the more realistic and practical “you will have no trouble with money.” Do the retellings of Grimm’s Fairy Tales in Akai Tori really enable children to experience beautiful fantasies and emotions?
