While research has been progressing on the types of fairy tales imported into Japan through English textbooks, there has been relatively little research into German textbooks. Twenty-five different Grimm’s fairy tales were found from Twenty-seven German textbooks, mainly in Engelien readers and Bock readers. The most commonly published tales were ‘An Old Grandfather and His Grandson’ and ‘The Turnip’ both of which are not so well-known presently. These tales were probably chosen because of the underlying moral values, which were shared with stories, such as ‘Loyalty to the Emperor and Piety to Parents’. In contrast, stories such as ‘The Wolf and the Seven Young Goats’ , ‘The Frog-King’, and ‘Snow White’, which were often published in children’s magazines, became widely popular because their content involved fantasy and captivated the imagination of young readers. The Meiji and Taisho German textbooks thus favored fairy tales emphasizing moral values, while children’s magazines offered stories with literary value.
