1873年の澤山保羅 に関する一考察 A Study on Paul Sawayama in 1873 髙田, 太 TAKATA, Tai open access 澤山保羅 エバンストン パブリック・スクール ノースウエスタン大学予科 サミュエル・グリーン 本論文は、澤山保羅の留学時代、特に1873 年における澤山のパブリック・スクール転校について、従来の記述を再検証するものである。最新の先行研究である『澤山保羅全集』では、澤山がノースウエスタン大学予科からパブリック・スクールへ転校したと記され、その後の澤山の通学先に関する記述はない。本論文では、杉井六郎氏による1970 年の論文が後続の伝記や年譜に与えた影響を確認し、そうした判断が形成された過程を追跡する。さらに、杉井氏が判断の根拠とする名和道一の書簡の英文表現を検討し、1873年のサミュエル・グリーンの事件とその影響、その年のモーア書簡やボーテル書簡の内容を点検することで、従来の推測の妥当性に疑問を呈する。本論文は先行研究の成果を精査しつつ、これを継承して今後の澤山保羅研究の方向性を示すものである。 This paper reexamines and provides new perspectives on the conventional account of Paul Sawayama’s alleged transfer to a public school during his studies in 1873. The Complete Works of Paul Sawayama, the most recent study, suggests that he transferred from the Preparatory School of Northwestern University to a public school, yet subsequent references to his schooling are absent. This study investigates the influence of Mutsuro Sugii’s 1970 paper on subsequent biographies and timelines, examining how these conclusions were reached. Furthermore, this study closely examines the English expressions in Michikazu Nawa’s letter, which Sugii used as the basis for his conclusions, reassesses the 1873 Samuel Green incident and its impact, and reevaluates the contents of the Moore and Boutell letters from that year, thereby questioning the validity of previous assumptions.
