『へスター』における女性家父長とファミリービジネス A Female Patriarch and Her Family Business in Margaret Oliphant’s Hester 近藤, 眞理子 KONDO, Mariko open access ヴィクトリア小説 ファミリー・ビジネス 家父長制 女性とキャリア 結婚 家族 Victorian Fiction Family Business Patriarchy Women and Careers Marriage Family この小論では、マーガレット・オリファントの『へスター』(1883)を取り上げ、二人のヒロインを比較分析することにより、ヴィクトリア社会における女性とビジネスの関係を考察する。65歳の銀行家キャサリンは代々継承されてきた家父長制的価値観を体現する女性である。それに対し、若いへスターはその価値観に閉塞感を感じている。名家の当主というプライドと責任感のために、キャサリンは女性でありながら家父長の役割を担わなければならない。その一方で、彼女は後継者エドワードに対しては母親としての愛情を感じている。しかし、家父長制システムにおいては、家父長と母親の両立は不可能である。物語の終盤、キャサリンはエドワードに手ひどく裏切られ、彼女の死後、へスターには結婚以外の未来は提示されない。キャサリンの悲劇的結末とへスターの不透明な未来は、ヴィクトリア社会においてキャリアと独立を求める女性たちが闘わなければならなかった社会的、経済的、心理的障壁の高さを明確に語っている。 This paper discusses how Margaret Oliphant dramatizes the relation between women and business in Victorian society, analyzing two heroines of Hester (1883). While 65-year-old Catherine, a successful businesswoman, represents the patriarchal values passed down from the Vernon forefathers, young Hester feels oppressed by the values. The pride and responsibility as a head of a distinguished family impose a contradictory role as a female patriarch on Catherine. She has mother-like affection for Edward, her heir, but is eventually crushed by his betrayal. After Catherine’s death, Hester has no other choice but marriage.
